Seiken Ryu Karate Association – Dance Studio – Wednesday’s 6-7pm

    SRK

Seiken Ryu was founded in 1975 in Tottington, Greater Manchester, a class that still runs today, and over the years has formed links with many other styles and types of martial art. Although our karate is very much traditional, in keeping with the philosophy of the style all students are encouraged to broaden their knowledge of martial arts, improve their understanding of the body and explore the concepts and principles that govern karate with an open mind and a willing body.

Open to anybody aged 6 or over, the instructor is Sensei Andrew Weatherson who is also currently teaching Karate in PE in lessons on a Friday.

    1st Washington Brownies & Guides

Brownies is for girls aged seven to ten.

    Brownies

Through regular meetings, special events, day trips, sleepovers, camps and holidays, Brownies learn new hobbies, play music, explore other cultures and get adventurous outdoors. Girls can also extend their knowledge and abilities by working towards Brownie interest badges covering many different hobbies and activities from Science investigator to Circus skills.

Brownies become a member of a Six, a unit with a name such as Badger, Fox, Mole, Squirrel, Hedgehog or Rabbit, and follow a programme called the Brownie Adventure.

The name reflects the world of exciting opportunities, challenges and fun that is Brownies.

    Cadets – Tuesday’s & Thursday’s 6-9pm

    ACF

For action and adventure, fun and friendship, the Army Cadet Force is hard to beat. With around 46,000 cadets (aged 12-18) and 8,500 adult volunteers in 1,700 locations in every corner of the United Kingdom, the ACF is one of the country’s largest voluntary youth organisations. It is also one of the oldest tracing its history back to 1859.

We welcome boys and girls from the age of 12 (and in at least year eight at school), of all abilities and backgrounds, and through a broad range of exciting, challenging, educational and adventurous activities, help them develop physically, mentally and socially. Some of our activities have a military theme, others have more of a community focus. Combining military and community activities in this way enables us to offer our 46,000 young people a unique blend of personal development opportunities, all designed to promote fun and friendship while also helping them prepare for success in their chosen path in life, whatever that might turn out to be.

The Army Cadet Force is one of four cadet forces sponsored and supported by theMinistry of Defence, the others being the Combined Cadet Force, the Sea Cadet Corps, and the Air Training Corps. Although the cadet forces are sponsored by the Ministry of Defence they are not a branch of the British Armed Forces, and as such cadets are not subject to military ‘call up’.

During 2012, the Government announced a new Schools Cadet Expansion Programme to enable up to 100 more state-funded schools in England to develop cadet units by 2015. The Government’s goal is to significantly increase the number of young people who are able to access the cadet experience – a development that is likely to deliver significant benefits to schools and young people.

    Gentoo – The Genfactor

In 2012 Washington School hosted the final round of Gentoo’s ‘Genfactor’ competition. The Genfactor is a talent competition which gives young, local performers from the Sunderland community their chance to shine and showcase their talents. Now in its sixth year, the competition has gone from strength to strength, with more than 800 guests packing out the stalls at the Empire theatre in 2014 to cheer on friends and family.

The Genfactor made full use of all of our excellent audio/vidual equipment and 200 seater auditorium to put on a fantastic show, the auditorium even has an adjoining green room where performers can prepare themselves, have refreshments and watch a live stream of the action on stage.

If you are interested in putting on a similar event please get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
