The Modern Foreign Languages Department has 2 members of staff.  Mrs Renshaw is a long standing member of the Modern Foreign Languages Department and teaches French.  Mrs El Khandari is Head of Department has recently joined the department teaches French and Spanish.

Students are put into classes according to their ability in KS3.  Students will study either French or Spanish in KS3.  Students are taught a broad range of topics and grammar via a variety of teaching and learning styles.

At Key Stage 4  students may choose to study the language previously studied to GCSE levels.  Language results have been very good over the last few years and continue to improve.

 

Key Stage 3

What will I learn in Year 7, 8 and 9?

You will develop your understanding and knowledge of the language you are studying. There will be various themes covered including some of the following;

Yourself and others
Family and Pets
School
Hobbies
Your town and holidays
Food
Within these themes you will consolidate your language skills and use them to speak and write about a variety of issues that are related to your experiences and interests.

How will I learn?

By LISTENING and responding to spoken French or Spanish.

By SPEAKING in French or Spanish.

By READING and understanding authentic texts (stories, letters, articles etc) and use of the internet.

By WRITING in the target language to communicate your ideas and opinions.

By using a dictionary.

 

What opportunities can this course and qualification lead to?

GCSE level.
AS/A level.
University degree (can be combined with other subjects).
Many employers reward people with language skills with extra salary because they know they are useful in today’s international business world.

What abilities, aptitudes, skills and interests will I need?

This subject involves a great deal of commitment with regard to learning chunks of language off by heart for controlled assessments for writing and taking part in lots of speaking activities. You must be prepared to speak in the target language in all lessons and at length for the controlled examination parts.
